Oscar Wilde in San Francisco | SAN FRANCISCO, March 28. |
Oscar Wilde delivered his first lecture at
Platt's Hall last evening. A full audience of the best social element was
present and received the "apostle of aesthetics" civilly and pleasantly.
..His subject was "English
Renaissance" and the substance of the lecture was a plea for the cultivation
of the artistic sentiment.
Commentary
There is the usual cynical editorial on the same
page (col. 1) treating Wilde as a curiosity. It is entitled THE LATEST
REFORMER and sympathizes with the people's long-suffering patience at the
"inconsistency and impudence" of the "dreamy-eyed" Oscar.
